Zimbabweans have managed to conquer the length and breadth of the globe to etch their names in the entertainment and sporting world.

Some have become global movie stars, sporting champions and exceptional singers. Some of the celebrities were born in Zimbabwe, while others were born abroad but had either or both parents as Zimbabweans.

This publication compiled a list, and here are some of the international celebrities with Zimbabwean roots.

Chris Martin from Coldplay

Chris Martin is one of the most prominent musical voices in the world, having serenaded the world with hits like Paradise by Coldplay or on Hymn for the Weekend by Beyonce and Homecoming by Kanye West.

He was born in Exeter, Devon, in the United Kingdom, in 1977.

His father, Anthony John Martin, is a retired chartered accountant, and his mother, Alison Martin, a music teacher, hails from Zimbabwe.

Martin used to visit Zimbabwe as a kid, and he still does. He was spotted in Victoria Falls on 15 April 2018, and a picture of him with a fan went viral.

Tinashe

Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe burst into the limelight in 2014 with her hit song 2 On featuring SchoolboyQ.

She was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on 6 February 1993. Her father, Michael Kachingwe, is a professor who teaches acting at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

He migrated to the United States from Zimbabwe before the songstress was born. In 2019, Tinashe raised the ire of her Zimbabwean fans when she said she’s not from the Southern African country, but her dad is.

Tinashe, in the Shona language, means “God with us.”

Thandiwe Newton

The British actress has mesmerised fans across the globe with her performances in movies like The Pursuit of Happyness, Mission: Impossible II, Crash, Run Fatboy Run and All the Old Knives.

Newton’s father, Nick Newton, is a laboratory technician and artist, while her mother, Nyasha, a Zimbabwean and a former healthcare worker.

The name “Thandiwe” means “beloved” in Ndebele.

Danai Gurira

Zimbabwean-American actress Danai Jekesai Gurira is best known for her role as Michonne on The Walking Dead and Okoye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame.

Danai’s parents moved from Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, to the United States in 1964.

Gurira was born in Grinnell, Iowa, in 1978 and was raised there until December 1983, when she moved with her family to Harare, Zimbabwe. She returned to the United States at 19 to study at Macalester College.
