In a tragic development, a farmer from Chiredzi was trampled to death by a herd of elephants after he tried to scare them away from his sorghum field in the Save Valley Conservancy.

The body of Peter Negate (41) of Chegwite area between Humane and Senukwe ranches was found covered with sorghum stover and shrubbery by villagers on Monday morning.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident.

According to the police report, before his tragic demise, Negate toured one of his fields and discovered that elephants had feasted on his sorghum crop.

In an effort to stop the jumbos from eating and destroy his sorghum crops, Negate decided to spend the night in the field anticipating their return.

Return they did just after midnight, and Negate decided to scare them away.

However, the elephants became aggressive and charged at him before trampling him to death.

According to the state media, the Police Support Unit and Parks and Wildlife Management Authority teams who attended the scene found that Negate’s left leg was broken while part of his ribs and bowels were protruding.

Meanwhile, in another related incident, a woman from Chitungizwa survived death by a whisker after she was recently attacked by elephants.

Anna Maswani (30) who is currently hospitalized at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals sustained serious injuries following an elephant attack at Musamba Fishing Camp in Kariba.

The mother of three children aged nine, eight, and two were walking alongside three other women in search of a fish permit when they, unfortunately, found themselves in the middle of an elephant herd.

The other three ladies managed to escape but sadly Maswani was not so fortunate as she tripped and fell before the elephants trampled on her. Luckily she survived the attack and was rushed to the hospital were she is currently recovering.
