Budiriro MP Costa Machingauta Appears In Court For Rape
Member of Parliament for Budiriro Constituency Costa Machingauta has appeared in court on allegations of raping a 25-year-old woman whom he accused of stealing his cellphone after he offered her a lift.
It is further alleged that Machingauta threatened her with a gun before raping her.
The legislator appeared before Harare Magistrate Barbra Mateko facing rape and contravening the firearms act charges. He was remanded in custody to April 23 and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
According to State papers, it is alleged that on April 4 2021 Machingauta took the complainant from her father’s workplace in Mabvuku and started accusing her of stealing his cellphone.
Machingauta reportedly drove into the Harare Central Business District and parked his car at Chicken Inn corner Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere before ordering some of the occupants to disembark from the car to buy food leaving him with the complainant seated on the back seat.
It is the State’s case that Machingauta threatened the complainant with a gun and forced her to have sexual intercourse with him without protection and consent.
On the charge of contravening the firearms act, it is the State’s case that on the day in question Machingauta went to the complainant’s house whom she suspected to have stolen his cellphone when he offered her a lift on April 3.
It is alleged that while at the house Machingauta met the other complainant and asked for the victim’s whereabouts and she told him that she was not around.
Machingauta allegedly withdrew a gun and pointed at her.
