Uganda Police Force (UPF) has promoted Olympian police officers who have contributed to the country’s historic performance at the Tokyo Olympics 2020

CAPE TOWN, September 21 (ANA) – Uganda Police Force (UPF) has promoted Olympian police officers who have contributed to the country’s historic performance at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Team Uganda walked away with four medals in their historic performance at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, three of which came from the country’s police officers.

Inspector of police (IP) Joshua Cheptegei, who won gold and silver medals at the Olympics in the 5,000m and 10,000m race, and his coach IP Benjamin Njia is being fast-tracked to the promotion of assistant superintendent of police (ASP), UPF spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement on Monday.

Promoted to special police constable from a private, Peruth Chemutai became an icon for becoming the first woman police officer gold medallist in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Mercyline Chelangat, the assistant inspector of police long-distance runner is promoted to IP.

Immaculate Chemutai, the corporal marathon runner was promoted to sergeant.

And sprinter Renny Shida is prompted to the rank of corporal.

“The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) continues to thank them for their historic win and achievements for the country and the Police Force as well,” Enanga writes.

“They are therefore being rewarded for the great success, pride and jubilation they brought to the institution and the country,” he adds.

The Olympians received a hero’s homecoming after returning from Tokyo in August.

Uganda’s performance at the Olympics 2020 saw the East African country placed above fellow African competitors South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Nigeria in the official rankings.
