Uganda women’s league resumes
JOHANNESBURG, April 20 (ANA) – Domestic women’s football resumed in Uganda on Monday, after a year of inactivity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Federation of Uganda Football Association (Fufa) organised the resumption of the Women’s Super League season in a new format.
This year’s edition of the women’s league comprises 10 teams divided into two groups in the normal season. The league is taking place at the Fufa Technical Center in Njeru in Buikwe district.
In the opening fixture, Makerere University lost to Uganda Martyrs’ Ladies 1-0 through Kevin Nakacwa’s 70th minute penalty. Kawempe Muslim thrashed Kampala Queens 4-0 after a brilliant performance. Kawempe’s goals came through Margaret Kunihira, Rhoda Nanziri, and a Hadijja Nandago brace.
Decolus Kiiza, Fufa deputy chief executive in charge of football, said the league will be played in two phases, with Group A playing from Monday to Sunday, while Group B takes over from April 26 to May 1.
“It will be one group at a time as we don’t have enough space at Njeru,” he said, adding that top two teams of each group qualify to the semi-finals. “The semi-finals and final will be played on May 3 and 5 respectively.”
The last edition of the women’s league was cancelled after the Covid-19 outbreak.
