JOHANNESBURG, June 30 (ANA) – The Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) over the weekend elected businessman Olivier Nizeyimana as its new president.

Members of Ferwafa held a presidential election during an extraordinary general assembly held on June 27 at Lemigo Hotel, in Kigali.

Mugabo Nizeyimana was competing for the top position with veteran referee Louis Rurangirwa, but the latter pulled out of the race on the election day.

The elections attracted delegates from both the World Football governing body (Fifa) and the Confederation of African Football as well as the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) president Wallace Karia.

Nizeyimana won the elections unopposed with 52 votes out of a possible 59.

After the elections, he thanked the federation’s members for their trust and called for their support to develop Rwandan football.

“With your support, I and my whole executive committee owe you a lot for your trust. We still need your support as we move to build our football and take it to another level,” Nizeyimana said.

Nizeyimana replaces outgoing Jean-Damascene Sekamana who resigned in April this year.

Last week, Caf marked 100 days under the leadership of new president Patrice Motsepe.

Since his election on March 12, Motsepe launched the pilot inter-school competition in Africa. On April 23, Motsepe began a working visit to Morocco and said: “We want African football to be amongst the best in the world.”

On May 6, in a visit to Ivory Coast the Caf president announced a 10 million US dollar donation from his Motsepe foundation to the Fifa-Caf Pan-African School Championship.

The USD 10m donation will be used to initiate and support the development and growth of schools’ football in the six Caf zones as part of the Fifa-Caf Pan-African School Football Championship which was launched by Fifa and Caf in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo a few weeks prior. – African News Agency (ANA), Editing by Michael Sherman
