JOHANNESBURG, June 2 (ANA) – Kenyan footballer Patrick Matasi and four of his family members are recovering in Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital after they were involved in a car accident, in Lessos, on Tuesday.

According to Kenyan publication Daily Nation, the Harambee Stars goalkeeper Matasi along with four other family members, including his wife and son, were travelling to Nairobi. The accident was caused by a burst tyre which resulted in the car rolling several times.

The Matasi family were first treated at a private hospital in Lessos, before being transferred to Kapsabet.

Albert Mulanda, a relative of Matasi who was driving behind the family told Nation Sport: “We saw that they could not get the best medication at Kapsabet Hospital because the facility lacked basic things. Patients are required to buy them to be attended to.”

Four of the Matasi family members are said to be in stable condition. Matasi’s two-year-old son’s condition is not known.

Matasi made his international debut in goal for Kenya in 2017, and has since played 26 matches for the East African nation.

Kenyan football made headlines last month when the Federation of International Football Associations (Fifa), demoted Premier League side Zoo FC to division one after the club was found guilty of match-fixing.

“The Fifa Disciplinary Committee finds the club Zoo FC responsible for activities related to manipulation of football matches and competitions….the club Zoo FC is hereby expelled from the Kenyan Premier League season 2020/21 as the date of notification of the present decision,” said Fifa Disciplinary Committee in a letter signed by its chairman Alejandro Piera. – African News Agency (ANA), Editing by Michael Sherman
