Kenya pushing rugby development
JOHANNESBURG, March 23 (ANA) – The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) over the weekend held a development program to help spread the game in the East African nation.
The KRU successfully held, under strict Covid-19 health guidelines, a Get Into Rugby (GIR) course on Saturday at the Impala Grounds in Nairobi.
A total of 40 men and women were able to attend the course which saw KRU development officer Ronnald Okoth, KRU Training and Education Coordinator Malik Ndemi and Rugby Africa’s Development Officer JohnBosco Muamba run the session.
The 40 members were selected from within the Nairobi Metropolitan and once they’re done with the course, they were expected to introduce rugby in their various Estates.
The new members were all required to have completed three prerequisites: Rugby Ready, Coaching Children, and Laws of the game.
Ronnald Okoth said: “The main purpose of this course is to increase our GIR numbers country-wide as well as the numbers of our equipped coaches. Increasing and maintaining these numbers will in-turn guarantee us good numbers of the players who make their way to our top tier clubs and eventually to the National Teams.”
There will be more GIR courses introduced in the KRU regions and will be organised and overseen by Okoth and Ndemi – assisted by the Regional Development Officers.
After this weekend, KRU will organise a monthly Children’s festival, the dates will be announced at a later stage.
Earlier this month, Kenyan Peris Mukoko was named among 10 other recipients for the World Rugby women’s executive leadership scholarship. Mukoko is a board member at KRU. – African News Agency (ANA), Editing by Michael Sherman
