JOHANNESBURG, April 26 (ANA) – Top-flight Domestic football in Kenya may resume in June, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa said on Monday.

If the league does indeed resume, teams will be subjected to a busy schedule of three matches per week.

Mwenda was quoted by Kenyan publication Nation Sport: “If it will be possible (to resume sports in June) then we have to complete the league and continue to align our calendar with Fifa and Europe.

“Our plea to the government is to allow sports to resume in earnest to alleviate our sportspersons from suffering.”

“If government gives permission for the league to resume, league sponsor BetKing has pledged to resume its financial support.”

However, if the league does not resume – Gor Mahia will be the chosen representative in African competition and the Cecafa Kagame Cup.

“The law says the former champions will represent the country and in the case of Kagame Cup and continental competitions, the slot will go to Gor Mahia,” Mwendwa told Nation Sport.

The proposed resumption comes at a time when Kenya deals with its highest number of active Covid-19 infections. As of Sunday, Kenya’s active cases stood at 47 577 which have been steadily rising since late February.

Two weeks ago, FKF confirmed Charles Okere as the new coach of the national women’s football team.

He replaced David Ouma in the position.

Okere had been serving as an assistant coach with 11-time Kenyan Premier League champions Tusker FC and starts with his first assignment over the weeken, when Kenya played Zambia in an international friendly match in Lusaka. – African News Agency (ANA), Editing by Michael Sherman
