It was wailing and gnashing of teeth yesterday as players of the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria could not hold back their tears after they were knocked out of the ongoing U-17 AFCON in Algeria.

The five-time world champions who managed to qualify from Group B with six points after unconvincing wins over Zambia and South Africa were beaten 2-1 by West African neighbours, Burkina Faso at Stade de Nelson Stadium in Algiers.

Both sides looked to be heading back into the dressing room on equal terms but the Burkinables had a different plan as Aboubacar Camara struck in the 45th minute for them to go into the break with a 1-0 advantage.

When hostilities resumed, the Golden Eaglets mounted pressure on their opponents as they searched for an equaliser but it was Burkina Faso who doubled their lead when Camara again bagged his brace from the spot in the 67th minute.

With defeat and elimination staring them in the face, the Nduka Ugbade lads fought back and were rewarded when Abubakar Abdullahi pulled one back for them in the 67th minute.

The Golden Eaglets who were in the hunt for a third AFCON title and a ticket to represent Africa again at the next FIFA World Championship threw everything at their opponents but met a brick wall as the Burkinables stood firm to pick the world championship ticket at their expense.
