The chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa Kwarra, has expressed concern over the continuous use of the 2006 census in Nigeria.
He spoke in Abuja at a presidential dinner in honour of the graduates of the Senior Executive Course 44 (2022) of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).
He said, “The continuous usage of the 2006 census for the estimation of Nigeria’s population has created a data gap in global population, which does not do credit to the country’s reputation.
“Relying on an estimate from a census conducted 16 years ago for a country that hosts a significant proportion of the world population is counterproductive.”

Kwarra said that with the recent successes recorded by “our gallant security forces,” the insecurity bedevilling some parts of the country would not affect the 2023 census.
