President Muhammadu Buhari has commissioned six projects worth N2.6 billion sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) at the Benue State University (BSU).

Buhari said that the commissioning of the projects at the state-owned university would greatly enhance teaching and learning and improvement of academic standards.

The president, who was represented by the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, expressed happiness that the six projects were being commissioned the same day.

He said the projects include construction and furnishing of academic staff office building; construction and furnishing of blocks of offices for College of Health Science; construction and furnishing of Education Building; the Research, Development and Innovation Centre and construction of Health and Counselling Development Centre.

Buhari noted the Fund had also sponsored 20,332 lecturers from the university for PhD degrees in both foreign and local institutions totalling over N153.5bn while 16,153 for masters degrees in both foreign and local institutions totalling N42.2bn and 92 for post doctorates totalling N951.5m as well as other sponsorship exceeding hundreds of millions.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, said the projects commissioned were commenced in May 2019 and completed in April 2023 at a total cost of N2.18bn.

Vice Chancellor of BSU, Prof Joe Iorapuu, thanked the federal government for the interventions as he posited that in addition to the six projects just commissioned, TETFund from 1999 until date had committed over N9bn to the university development.
