Gabon’s Aubameyang propels Arsenal to victory over Spurs
JOHANNESBURG, September 27 (ANA) – Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was part of an Arsenal onslaught which reeled off three goals in 22 minutes as The Gunners scored an upset 3-1 victory, over Tottenham in their English Premier League (EPL) match at The Emirates Stadium in London on Sunday.
Emile Smith Rowe scored the opener for Arsenal in the 12th minute, before Aubameyang doubled his side’s advantage 15 minutes later. In the 34th minute, Arsenal were three ahead as Bukayo Saka scored his side’s third.
Spurs scored a consolation goal through Son Heung-min in the 79th minute, as Arsenal held on for a convincing win.
Spurs had topped the EPL table after three matches, with three wins in a row to begin their campaign. Since then, however, have now also lost three in a row with this latest defeat to find themselves 11th on the log. Arsenal, meanwhile, have risen ahead of their London rivals to 10th in the table with nine points from six games.
Aubameyang, now aged 32, became the first African to captain the winning team in an FA Cup final, as Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley Stadium last year.
Not only did the French-born striker lead his team to victory, but scored both goals against their London rivals.
At the time, Arteta paid tribute to the contribution of Aubameyang.
“Big games require big moments from big players, and he’s delivered that in the semi-final and he’s done it again in the final,” said Arteta.
“That’s why you ask about those players. Some were questioning that he couldn’t do it in big games. There we go. He was a big, big part of delivering this trophy. He’s done it and we are so proud to have a player like him in your squad.” – African News Agency (ANA), Editing by Michael Sherman
