JOHANNESBURG, May 13 (ANA) – International Basketball Federation (Fiba) Africa on Wednesday confirmed Cameroon as the host country of the 2021 Women’s AfroBasket (African Basketball Championship).

The women’s continental basketball showpiece is set to be held from September 17 to 26, at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex in the Cameroonian capital.

The announcement was made after the host agreement was signed by the Cameroon Sports Minister Kombi Mouelle on behalf of the Cameroon Government.

The tournament returns to Yaounde for the first time since 2015 when the hosts finished second in the 12-nation competition.

Hosts Cameroon alongside the 2019 semi-finalists which include the reigning champions Nigeria, finalists Senegal, third and fourth-placed Mali and Mozambique automatically qualified for this year’s edition while the other seven slots are up for grabs.

Regional qualifying tournaments are set to commence later this month all through to July, across the continent with the winners automatically booking a place in Cameroon.

Earlier this week, Cameroonian men’s club Forces Armees et Police (Fap) captain Ebaku Akumenzoh said the tide may just be turning in favour of the Central African nation on the world stage.

Akumenzoh told FIBA.basketball ahead of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) which will be staged in Kigali, Rwanda from Sunday to May 30: “It’s a dream come true. Every competitor wants to play against the best. If you’re good, you only get better playing tougher sides and if you want to be considered amongst the greats, you have to beat the best.” – African News Agency (ANA), Editing by Michael Sherman
