APA-Mogadishu (Somalia) Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has made a successful comeback as the new president of Somalia by beating the incumbent at the tense election in Mogadishu on Sunday.

Mohamud, who was president from 2012 to 2017 was sworn-in at a low0key ceremony in the capital Mogadishu early on Monday.

He succeeds Farmajo, the man who defeated in 2017.

Mohamud’s election was seen as the closest race for the presidency in Somalia since the country was rocked by instability following the overthrow of veteran ruler Siad Barre in 1991.

Political pundits say he faces a grim task of ending the country’s decades-old insurgency led by al-Shabaab whose threat hung menacingly over Sunday’s vote which was held inside the country’s main airport in Mogadishu amid heavy security.

Report even spoke of the area around the airport being shelled ostensibly by the insurgents as the vote by MPs took place.

The 66-year-old Mohamud has promised to restore both political and economic stability in troubled Somalia.
