APA-Pretoria (South Africa) The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) will on Thursday sign a new Global Fund grant valued at over US$540 million under the next three-year cycle for its HIV and TB response in the country.

“The Global Fund has approved an amount of US$546,766,625 for the period April 2022-March 2025, which will continue to support the HIV programme and expand the Tuberculosis programme in South Africa,” the health ministry said in a statement.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla will officiate during the signing ceremony set for Pretoria.

According to the ministry, the grant will be administered through a structure known as the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism (GF-CCM), which is co-chaired by SANAC chief executive Thembisile Xulu and SANAC Civil Society Forum deputy chairperson Solly Nduku.

The GF-CCM is a multi-stakeholder structure mandated by the Global Fund to oversee grant implementation, the ministry said.

It features representatives from government, civil society, development partners and the private sector worldwide, it added.

Multi-billionaires Bill Gates and his former wife Melinda are financial backers of the fund under their Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation based in the USA.
