APA-Pretoria (South Africa) South Africa has surpassed the 85,000 Covid-19 death toll mark after 125 people succumbed to the virus on Monday, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has announced.

The NICD said the latest deaths brought the total number of people who have died since the virus was first detected in the country in March 2020.

The centre also revealed that 2,640 new Covid-19 cases were recorded on Monday, taking the total infections to 2,860,835.

Some 864 cases were in the Eastern Cape province while 601 were in KwaZulu-Natal Province, the agency said.

It added that no other province passed the 500 mark for new daily infections, with the Free State recording 258, the Western Cape recording 240 and the Northern Cape Province recording 229.

Gauteng province recorded 150 new infections, the agency said, as the number of infections continued to recede with President Cyril Ramaphosa announcing the easing of lockdown restrictions from Level 3 to Level 2 on Sunday night.

There were 163 hospital admissions in the 24 hours to Monday night, taking the total number of people admitted to 10,140 patients nationwide, the NICD said.
