APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) President Cyril Ramaphosa has assured South Africa’s black business leaders that his government is taking measures to address current electricity challenges that are threatening to cripple the country’s economy.

Addressing the inaugural Black Industrialists and Exporters Conference in Johannesburg on Wednesday, Ramaphosa said his government has put into motion plans “to act decisively and urgently to end the loadshedding that is causing such damage to our economy.”

“We are currently engaged in consultations with social partners on these measures, and will soon be able to announce a package of measures that provides an effective response to our energy crisis,” Ramaphosa said.

South Africa has experienced intermittent power outages for the past few years, which have triggered streets protests in recent months.

Ramaphosa, however, defended his government, saying a lot has been done over the past four years to transform South Africa’s energy landscape and that this has brought new generation capacity online.

“But that is not enough. We need to move faster. That is why I have brought together all relevant departments and entities to work on an integrated set of measures to add additional power to the grid in the shortest possible time,” he said.

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel hosted the inaugural Black Industrialists and Exporters Conference which showcased progress of government measures in promoting transformation of more black industrialists in the economy and the opportunities that the African Continental Free Trade Area offers them.
