APA-Pretoria (South Africa) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for an investigation into last week’s road accident that claimed the lives of 21 people, including 19 students, in KwaZulu-Natal province.

The learners were killed when their vehicle collided with a truck near Pongola in northern KwaZulu-Natal on September 16.

“I hope the investigation into the Pongola incident will shed light on the cause of this tragedy and help us take better care of our children into the future,” Ramaphosa said on Sunday.

He expressed sadness at the fact that South Africa continued to lose young lives under preventable conditions.

The accident comes in the wake of the death of 21 young people at a tavern in the Eastern Cape province recently.

An investigation by the police found that the deaths of the mostly under-age revellers was caused by suffocation in the over-crowded tavern.
