Malawi: Chakwera calls for national prayers for rains

Most parts of Malawi have so far received erratic rainfall, with the majority of farmers yet to plant crops for the 2021/ 22 season that is supposed to run from October 2021 to April 2022. The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has, however, announced that the country is forecast to start receiving significant rains in the coming week.

APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) President Lazarus Chakwera has declared the first week of 2022 as days of national prayer to seek divine intervention in the dry spell facing the country, presidential spokesman Anthony Kaunda has said.

In a statement on Thursday, Kaunda said Chakwera “is calling on all believers and faith communities across the country to dedicate the first seven days of the New Year to pray for the end of the dry spell currently being experienced in the country which could impact the next farming season.”

“The president, therefore, calls on the mother bodies of all faith groups to encourage their communities to pray together whenever they meet for worship on their designated holy days,” the official said.

The seven-day period of prayer would include fasting and prayer meetings.
