CAPE TOWN, July 15 (ANA) – A Northern Cape man has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for raping his step-sister while she was seven months pregnant.

Tshenolo Moagi, 27 was convicted over the April 2016 attack at the pair’s home in Bankhara, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Dimakatso Mooi said in a statement on Wednesday. He also assaulted the victim when she tried to fight back during the rape.

Days after the incident, Moagi was arrested and remanded in custody until his conviction, after the state opposed his bail application. Earlier this week, the court sentenced him to 10 years direct imprisonment.

The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and his name has been recorded in the Sexual Offences Register for offenders.

Kuruman Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences commander Captain Caren Nel commended investigating officer Keitumetse Semetsa for her commitment and thorough probe which helped secure the conviction.

In an unrelated incident, police in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape arrested five women and two men after they were found in possession of a shotgun and cannabis.

According to provincial police spokesperson Captain Hazel Mqala, officers attached to the East London K9 Unit, the East London Crime Centre, the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) and members of the South African National Defence Force spotted a suspicious vehicle and upon searching it discovered a shotgun and an undisclosed amount of money.

The smell of cannabis also lingered in the air as they conducted the search. Officers questioned the two men in the car about the money and the smell of cannabis.

“Apparently all the information that they gave led the (officers) to Bryaelyn and Duncan Village where they arrested five females from different shacks … A variety of drugs were also confiscated,” Mqala said.

The suspects, aged between 29 and 45, are expected to appear in the East London magistrate’s court soon.
